MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded within the mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA region. It is part of a group of mitochondrial-derived peptides involved in communication between mitochondria and the rest of the cell.
Cell and mouse experiments have examined its relationship with glucose metabolism and AMPK, an enzyme that helps cells respond to changes in available energy. In cultured cells under metabolic stress, MOTS-c has also been observed moving into the nucleus and influencing gene expression. These findings connect the peptide to cellular energy sensing and stress responses.
